Heritage Repointing in Bakery Hill

In Bakery Hill the precinct statement (HO 176, Bridge Mall/Bakery Hill) singles out a stepped face brick retaining wall with a bluestone base and a rendered moulded capping at the former Ballarat East Post Office. One wall, three masonry materials: the brick joints, the stone base and the render are different surfaces, and a single approach to mortar does not follow from that.

Heritage Repointing around Bakery Hill

The wall is named in the City of Ballarat's Heritage Precincts Statements of Significance, written in 2006 and revised in August 2014, an Incorporated Document in the Ballarat Planning Scheme, as one of the precinct's important aesthetic qualities, alongside short lengths of cast iron palisade fence with a bluestone plinth and piers. This page does not say that any wall you own is like it. It shows what mixed masonry in one structure looks like in the precinct's own description.

Where one wall mixes brick, stone and render, ask the provider what each part is, what the mortar will be in each joint and how the repair meets the neighbouring material. The code says modern cement-based mortars are incompatible with lime mortars and with many of the masonry materials used in older buildings, so the answer may differ between the brick and the stone.

Permits and City of Ballarat rules

Whether a repointing job at an address here needs a permit depends on the property, not the suburb. This page does not say whether any address is in a Heritage Overlay or on the Victorian Heritage Register; the City of Ballarat's Heritage Advisors can say, and Heritage Victoria for a Register place.
